To expand surface water storage capacity of Ulaanbaatar city, Golomt Bank is funding the “Bumbat Reservoir Project”. On February 5, 2026, the Governor’s office of the Songinkhairhan District, the Water Agency of Mongolia, and Prestige Engineering LLC signed a “Memorandum of Understanding to commence the project”.
Eighty percent of Mongolia’s surface water resources are held in lakes, but climate change and pollution have disrupted the balance of local ecosystem. In response, the “Bumbat Reservoir Project” aims to protect water resources, promote environmentally friendly water use and reuse. The project supports sustainable ecosystem and economic development through improved, long-term water management practices.
The project will collect water from the Baruun Salaa River or Bumbat Reservoir, located in the 24th Khoroo of Songinokhairhan District, and build a reservoir with a total capacity of 16.9 thousand cubic meters. This initiative provides a long-term sustainable water management solution that will improve surface water storage in Ulaanbaatar while helping reduce soil degradation and flood risk. The project also includes the development of a landscaped park with green spaces, which, together with the reservoir, is expected to be handed over to the capital’s residents by June 30 this year.
The project is funded by Golomt Bank as part of its social responsibility commitment. The Governor’s office of Songinokhairhan District serves as the project applicant, the Water Agency of Mongolia acts as the coordinating government body, and Prestige Engineering LLC is the project contractor.
